...And Then There Was One

I remember watching the movie Open Water and just hoping that life would never put me in a situation like that. Then on Thursday I had the opportunity to catch Oprah and found it to be quite disturbing. The topic covered a real life open water tragedy that involved two NFL football players, a former college player and a friend to these gentlemen, a man named Nick Schuyler the owner of a gym which is where he came to know the NFL stars. I've never been much of a football fan. I remember wanting a Raider's cap just because it was "in", so prior to Oprah's show, I had never even heard of Corey Smith and Marquis Cooper, let alone Will Bleakley. But now it seems I will never forget their tragic story.

On February 28, 2009 the four men set out on a fishing trip to what was Marquis Cooper's favorite spot-a spot set 70 miles off the Florida Coast. Marquis wanted to go out there one last time before he began camp. The fish seemed to be biting but the weather was not as cooperative. According to Nick it took nearly four hours to reach their destination. In the late afternoon, with such choppy waters and winds, Marquis decided to turn the single engine boat around, it seems they all sensed a storm might be coming but during the process, the anchor got stuck. An incident that happened one week prior on the same waters. That time they decided to cut the line and let the anchor go. But this time, Nick stated, Marquis did not want to lose another anchor. A decision that would turn out to be tragic.

"We tried a couple different maneuvers and turned the boat around and pulled it from every which angle," he says. "At that point, I was pretty much worthless because I had been sick so long." After trying different approaches, they decided to untie the rope and gun the engine. The boat began to rock and eventually the entire thing flipped over. They tried using manpower to flip it back but physics fought against them and won. The next 43 hours were hours that no one will ever really know what happened-even with Nick Schuyler being the only survivor. I say that because based on the simple facts alone being disturbing, the way in which Nick describes the deaths of Marquis and Corey is even more so. With the relentless elements working against them, hypothermia began to set in. Marquis was the first one to show signs, beginning with his silence and delayed responses after the other men yelled his name. He had been hanging onto a cooler they brought with them. Soon after, hallucenations began and Marquis began to take off his jacket and attempt to go back in the water. With the help of the other men, they were able to pull him up on the flipped boat which was not easy. They themselves were trying to stay on. According to Nick, he was the one who bear hugged Marquis for about an hour to keep him from fighting to get up, until he couldn't fight anymore. That is when Nick says he had to choose between Marquis's lifeless body and Corey. He had to let Marquis go. Soon after, Corey, began to show similar signs of hypothermia, saying things that he normally wouldn't say, screaming and becoming "aggressive", an adjective often associated with black males. Not in his right mind, Corey kept "leapfrogging" off the boat while Nick and Will continued to scream and hold him. At that point Nick says he sliced his arm on the motor during the process and let go of Corey as he basically did a "swan dive" into the sea. That was the last time they saw him.

Now Will, who was also Nick's best friend was invited at the last minute after another friend cancelled. He was the only one who died without a fight. Which triggered so many questions in my head.

After watching that the interview I was left feeling little sympathy for Nick Schuyler and much sympathy for the families of Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith. Having to hear how aggressive and out of their minds they were before they died while Nick and Will's mentality remained somewhat in tact considering the circumstances. Before Will passed on, he and Nick were able to say I love you to each other. Something I'm sure the bereaved families wish they had've done.

Oprah began to ask Nick if he heard mention of the idea that he wrote his book Not Without Hope, to profit off of the tragedy. I personally can't imagine a monster who would do such a thing but I also don't know how Nick, who in his own words was so sick that he was pretty much "worthless" at one point turned out to be the only survivor. I guess we'll never know what really happened out there on the sea for those two days or whether the other three gentlemen would have slightly different stories to tell.

May the Fast Be with Me...

Okay, Okay. I know I've said it before but this time I really mean it...I think. Hey it's hard to fast when you work in a restaurant. But I think I will start trying this salad thing, then slowly make my way to just water...and these Whole Body Cleanse tablets I got today. This has nothing to do with losing weight, although that is a benefit. This is just something I need to do and something that is long overdue. I need clarity as well as sound mind and body. I've been slacking in the area of feeding my mind and spirit positivity and as a result had an attitude that sucks! Another possible disadvantage of working in the hospitality field. One cannot be "on" all the time, so in the kitchen or "backstage" is where the smiles disappear and the cussin' begins. If you let it, that energy can be contagious. A draining emotional rollercoaster to say the least-So I have to keep my self right. If not for me~for the little girl~wish me luck, blessings, positive energy and all that jazz...

Why So Gaga Over Lady Gaga?

The first time I saw Lady Gaga perform was on American Idol. Prior to that I couldn't figure out what the big deal was about her. I mean her outfits just appeared to be thrown together for shock effect and she looked a little bit like Madonna who I grew up on and absolutely love, so naturally I figured she was a wannabe. It wasn't until I saw her on American Idol that I realized how strong her voice was (a one up on Madonna) which got my attention but wasn't enough to keep it. At first glance her music sounded too "dance poppy" for me, that is until I heard an interview in which she described the meaning of her song "Poker Face"-the face she tried to keep in bed with a man while fantasizing about women. I thought that was funny. I was intrigued. After seeing her name on the most downloaded list like everyday on VH1 and I decided to youtube a few live performances and stumbled upon more interviews of hers like with Oprah (my girl) and Ellen (yay) and came to understand of the artistic space she allows herself and her fans, or "little monsters" as she refers to them and that there is a method to what may appear to be the madness of her outfits.

I myself am now a little monster though maybe not as die hard as some. One cannot deny her talents. Big ups to Lady Gaga who has also been apart of many hip hop collaborations. Viva La Musical Evolution!

As the Days Go By/The End of the Procrastination Era

I'm finally at a point in my life where I feel I have control-somewhat. I still have to work on my emotions but in terms of becoming a "real" adult, I feel like I'm gettin' a bit of a grip on it. Now of course, I am becoming antsy. Probably because I know that my destiny is serving at the Olive Garden. I have two goals. One dealing with photography, the other dealing with music and if I could make money doing both of those, I could almost die in peace-almost. But I am the queen of procrastination and enjoy a hobby that does not stimulate me physically (another internal battle I've created for myself). So I decided to do at least two things towards my goals and blog about it everyday until they manifest. Now it's up to me and only me to create the life I want, surround myself with like-minded individuals and make a point to consciously stay mentally and physically healthy.

Ella

It Feels Good to Be Back

It's been a little while since last I wrote something on my blog page but I'm back now and boy does it feel good. Since my last entry there have been many changes but we had to go through the bad to get to where we are now. From Miami to Tampa. From a bathroom, yes I said bathroom to an adorable one bedroom in a super convenient area which is great for the carless. I also went from unemployed to being a server aka waitress at the Olive Garden which has already been a trip in itself but hopefully you wont have to hear too much about that but like I mentioned earlier-it feels really good to be back and it definitely feels good to be stable for the first time in my adult life. I guess I have G O D and Ella to thank for that. I'll be keepin you posted...
